What To Know

  • According to this Thailand AI News report, the ambitious plans encompass artificial intelligence, advanced technologies, and data centers, with Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia identified as preferred destinations.
  • Speaking in Malacca, Anwar revealed that Son had identified Kuching in Sarawak alongside locations in Peninsular Malaysia for investments potentially ranking among Southeast Asia’s largest technology commitments.

Malaysia is positioning itself as one of Southeast Asia’s most formidable artificial intelligence investment destinations following Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s announcement that Japan’s SoftBank Group is planning technology investments worth US$50 billion, approximately 1.7 trillion baht. The proposed investment could dramatically strengthen Malaysia’s AI infrastructure while intensifying competition with Thailand for regional technology leadership.

The announcement followed a video conference between Anwar and SoftBank founder Masayoshi Son, during which potential investment locations were discussed. According to this Thailand AI News report, the ambitious plans encompass artificial intelligence, advanced technologies, and data centers, with Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia identified as preferred destinations. The development represents another significant milestone in Malaysia’s efforts to become a leading regional digital economy.

SoftBank Expands Its Global AI Ambitions

Speaking in Malacca, Anwar revealed that Son had identified Kuching in Sarawak alongside locations in Peninsular Malaysia for investments potentially ranking among Southeast Asia’s largest technology commitments.

SoftBank has already pursued substantial AI infrastructure initiatives internationally, including major projects in the United States, France, and Japan. Its growing interest in Malaysia reflects the country’s strategic importance as demand for computing capacity, cloud infrastructure, and AI services accelerates.

However, the US$50 billion figure remains an announced investment plan rather than confirmation that the entire amount has already been disbursed.

Malaysia Builds on Existing Technology Investments

Malaysia has already attracted considerable international attention from technology giants including Microsoft, Google, and Amazon.

According to the Malaysian Investment Development Authority, the country recorded approximately 385.7 billion ringgit, equivalent to US$94 billion, in data-center-related investments between 2021 and the first half of 2026.

SoftBank’s proposed commitment could further strengthen this investment ecosystem, supporting semiconductor development, advanced computing infrastructure, and opportunities for domestic technology companies.

Anwar emphasized that political stability, predictable government policies, and investor confidence remain essential factors in attracting international capital.

Why Malaysia Could Outperform Thailand

Malaysia arguably enjoys several structural advantages over Thailand in competing for sophisticated AI investments.

English proficiency is generally stronger across Malaysia’s professional workforce, facilitating international technology partnerships, technical training, and collaboration with multinational corporations.

Malaysia also performs better than Thailand on widely used international corruption perception measures, although governance challenges remain in both countries.

Furthermore, Malaysia’s government has demonstrated considerable willingness to engage international investors and coordinate public-private technology initiatives.

Thailand, meanwhile, faces persistent concerns surrounding bureaucratic inefficiency, political patronage, and the concentration of economic influence among powerful conglomerates. Critics argue that these conditions can disadvantage smaller businesses and discourage competitive innovation.

Although Thailand possesses substantial industrial capabilities and an established digital economy, Malaysia’s comparatively accessible international business environment could provide a decisive competitive advantage.

High-Skilled Employment and AI Nation 2030

Malaysia’s ambitions extend beyond constructing data centers. The government wants technology investments to generate skilled employment, strengthen local suppliers, and accelerate domestic innovation.

Its AI Nation 2030 strategy emphasizes developing advanced technological capabilities rather than remaining dependent on traditional electronics assembly and lower-value manufacturing.

Success will nevertheless require substantial investments in education, engineering expertise, reliable electricity, and sustainable infrastructure.

A Defining Contest for Regional Technology Leadership

Malaysia’s proposed SoftBank investment could reshape Southeast Asia’s technological landscape, particularly if the announced commitments translate into operational facilities, meaningful technology transfers, and sustainable employment.

For Thailand, the development highlights the urgency of improving regulatory transparency, encouraging broader private-sector participation, and strengthening workforce capabilities. Malaysia’s advantages do not guarantee victory, but its increasingly coordinated investment strategy places significant pressure on Bangkok to respond decisively.
