What To Know

  • His explanation, as covered in this Thailand AI News report, distinguishes an experimental assessment from a government commitment to spend public money.
  • The controversy also reflects on the degree and quality of reporting and accuracy by many of the local media outlets in Thailand especially those that are heavily promoted by Google and Google News.

Minister Rejects Budget Approval Claims

Thailand’s proposed use of artificial intelligence for weather forecasting has become the center of a dispute over reports of government spending. Digital Economy and Society Minister Chaichanok Chidchob denied that the cabinet had approved a 497-million-baht project involving American weather technology company Tomorrow.io, describing the circulating claims as fake news.

Speaking at Government House on September 29, Chaichanok said the initiative remained a feasibility exercise rather than an approved purchase. His explanation, as covered in this Thailand AI News report, distinguishes an experimental assessment from a government commitment to spend public money. Officials are still examining whether the technology offers sufficient benefits and value for Thailand.

Testing Does Not Mean Purchasing

The minister explained that work began under the previous administration through a proof-of-concept study. Such testing allows officials to assess whether a proposed system can deliver useful results before proceeding toward procurement or implementation.

The assessment explored how satellites operating in low Earth orbit, combined with AI analysis, could help integrate weather information and improve forecasting. Chaichanok acknowledged that the work demonstrated improvements, but said this did not mean a budget had been prepared or a project authorized. Alternative approaches remain under examination, with performance and cost-effectiveness central to the comparison.

Free Trial Revealed Unfinished Work

The Thai Meteorological Department’s experience adds another dimension to the controversy. According to reporting about its assessment, an initial pilot ran from December 2025 through February 2026, followed by additional free access until June 30.

The department subsequently stopped using the Tomorrow.io National Resilience Platform. Its findings indicated that the system had useful capabilities but needed further technical improvements. Data and functions also required adjustments to fit Thailand’s operational requirements and local conditions. The department communicated its assessment to the ministry in July.

Those findings suggest that promising demonstrations alone would not settle the purchasing decision. Any future adoption would need to address the shortcomings identified during testing, alongside questions about price, integration, and practical usefulness.

Existing Weather Systems Still Matter

Thailand already has substantial forecasting infrastructure. The supplied reporting places the value of the Meteorological Department’s radar and weather station network at approximately 4.5 billion baht.

The ministry said a new platform, if eventually adopted, would supplement those resources by adding another layer of information. That distinction matters because combining satellite observations with existing systems requires careful evaluation. A technology’s potential contribution must be measured against what forecasters already receive and what additional information they actually need.

Publishers Face Requests for Corrections

Permanent Secretary Patchara Anantasin also challenged the spending reports during a telephone interview with Nation TV’s Inside Thailand program. According to the supplied account, he said the ministry would write to publishers requesting corrections and could consider legal action if those requests were ignored.

The account identifies Bangkok Post, Daily News, and Bangkok Biz News (Part of Nation Group) among outlets that carried reports about the proposed project. The ministry was also examining where the disputed claim originated.

Public Spending Demands Clear Answers

The controversy leaves two separate issues requiring clear answers: how well the technology performed and whether any spending proposal has formally advanced. Trial participation cannot, by itself, demonstrate cabinet approval.

For Thailand, the next step should bring transparent test results, clear procurement information, and a comparison of available options. Better forecasting could benefit communities, businesses, and emergency planning, but public confidence depends on accurate reporting and verifiable decisions about expenditure.

The controversy also reflects on the degree and quality of reporting and accuracy by many of the local media outlets in Thailand especially those that are heavily promoted by Google and Google News.
