What To Know

  • The takeover began in April, when SpaceX and Cursor announced a partnership focused on accelerating model training and developing technology together.
  • Cursor has evolved from software designed mainly to predict and complete lines of code into a platform pursuing AI “teammates” capable of handling substantial programming work.

SpaceX has officially completed its acquisition of AI coding startup Cursor, closing a closely watched artificial intelligence deal. The transaction follows months of cooperation and gives Elon Musk’s aerospace and technology group ownership of a platform built to reshape software development.

The takeover began in April, when SpaceX and Cursor announced a partnership focused on accelerating model training and developing technology together. SpaceX secured an option to acquire Cursor for $60 billion. By June, the companies confirmed they were moving ahead, and this AI News report highlights how the completed deal now connects Cursor’s software ambitions with SpaceX’s computing resources. Cursor says joining SpaceX will provide access to what it calls the world’s largest fleet of GPUs.

Compute Becomes the Competitive Weapon

That computing capacity could prove central to Cursor’s next phase. The company says GPU access should allow it to train more capable AI models while making them cheaper to operate. That could help Cursor offer customers stronger coding tools at lower costs as AI competition intensifies.

Cursor has evolved from software designed mainly to predict and complete lines of code into a platform pursuing AI “teammates” capable of handling substantial programming work. The company pointed to Grok 4.6, released Wednesday, as an early indication of what deeper integration with SpaceX infrastructure could make possible.

SpaceX Expands Its AI Footprint

The acquisition also strengthens SpaceX’s position in artificial intelligence infrastructure. The company has been renting computing capacity to customers including Anthropic and Google, while earlier this year it also acquired Musk’s xAI. Its data-center expansion has nevertheless attracted scrutiny, including legal action over pollution allegedly produced by gas turbines used for computing operations.

For Cursor, the deal represents far more than a change of ownership. Access to computing infrastructure could accelerate its transformation from coding assistant to powerful AI development partner, while giving SpaceX another route to commercialize its compute empire. The key question is whether that scale will deliver better tools, lower prices and measurable productivity gains for developers worldwide.
