What To Know

  • The move places the popular social media platform among a growing number of technology companies taking action against the flood of low-quality AI-generated material, often referred to as “AI slop,” that has become increasingly common across digital platforms.
  • In a blog post announcing the changes, Snapchat said it wants Spotlight to continue serving as a platform where users can discover authentic creativity from real people.

Snapchat has announced a significant change to its Spotlight platform by ending rewards for videos created entirely with artificial intelligence, reinforcing its commitment to promoting authentic, human-made content. The move places the popular social media platform among a growing number of technology companies taking action against the flood of low-quality AI-generated material, often referred to as “AI slop,” that has become increasingly common across digital platforms.

The company revealed the policy update on Friday, explaining that its recommendation systems will now be refined so only videos created by real people will qualify for Spotlight recommendations and creator rewards. This AI News report highlights Snapchat’s latest effort to ensure that originality and genuine storytelling remain at the heart of the user experience. While artificial intelligence continues to reshape digital content creation, Snapchat believes authentic moments, personal perspectives and original creativity remain what audiences value most when discovering new content.

Human Creativity Takes Centre Stage

In a blog post announcing the changes, Snapchat said it wants Spotlight to continue serving as a platform where users can discover authentic creativity from real people. The company stressed that rewarding original viewpoints and personal storytelling is essential to maintaining the platform’s unique identity in an era where AI-generated content is becoming increasingly widespread.

However, Snapchat has made it clear that the new policy is not an outright rejection of artificial intelligence. Instead, creators are encouraged to use the platform’s AI-powered creative tools to enhance or edit their videos, provided the final content still reflects meaningful human input. The company sees AI as a valuable assistant that can improve creativity rather than replace it entirely.

Growing Push Against AI Slop

The latest announcement builds on Snapchat’s broader strategy to improve the quality of Spotlight content. Earlier this year, the company revealed that users would begin seeing less AI-generated material in recommendations, signaling a stronger emphasis on original posts created by real people.

Snapchat’s decision comes as criticism of low-quality AI-generated content continues to grow across the technology industry. Platforms are increasingly reviewing their algorithms, introducing reporting features and tightening content policies to reduce the visibility of repetitive, generic and fully automated material.

LinkedIn recently introduced a reporting option allowing users to flag posts that appear to be AI-generated through a button labelled “seems like AI slop.” Newsletter platform Substack has also introduced tools designed to help readers identify newsletters produced with artificial intelligence.

Meanwhile, Meta faced considerable criticism after rolling out an Instagram feature that allowed users to alter publicly shared photos using AI. Following widespread backlash from users and creators, the company ultimately removed the feature.

YouTube has also strengthened its approach by updating its monetization policies to prevent inauthentic AI-generated content from earning advertising revenue. The platform now specifically targets repetitive, template-based productions and has imposed stricter rules on AI-generated personalities discussing sensitive topics such as health and finance.

New Safety Measures for Younger Users

Beyond improving content quality, Snapchat continues to introduce additional safeguards for younger members of its community. Last month, the platform rolled out new controls limiting Spotlight sharing for users aged 13 to 15. Under the updated rules, teenagers can only share Spotlight posts with people they mutually follow, helping reduce the risks associated with doxxing and unwanted exposure online.

Snapchat’s latest policy reflects a broader shift taking place across the digital landscape as social media companies work to balance the benefits of artificial intelligence with the importance of preserving genuine human creativity. Rather than eliminating AI from the creative process, platforms are increasingly encouraging its responsible use while ensuring authentic storytelling remains at the forefront. As more technology companies introduce similar measures, creators are likely to find greater value in producing distinctive, original content that connects with audiences in meaningful ways.
