The UAE has achieved an unparalleled adoption rate, with 64.0% of its working-age population regularly using generative AI, reflecting years of strategic investment and government-led digital initiatives. Singapore is not far behind, logging a 60.9% usage rate, a testament to its robust infrastructure and long-term focus on research and development in emerging technologies. Meanwhile, AI usage in other parts of the world tells a far more varied story, with developed and developing economies displaying wide adoption gaps.
Stark Global Divide in AI Engagement
Microsoft’s expansive analysis covers 147 countries, uncovering a clear divide in AI engagement between the Global North and South. Countries in the Global North recorded an AI usage rate of around 24.7%, while the Global South lagged significantly behind at 14.1%. These figures underscore how national policies, digital infrastructure, and public trust can dramatically influence uptake.
In Europe, nations such as Norway (46.4%), Ireland (44.6%), and France (44.0%) stood out as leaders on the continent, buoyed by government-backed technology ecosystems. Despite being home to many of the world’s top AI companies, the United States ranked 24th globally, with only 28.3% of its working-age population engaged with AI tools — a shortfall experts partly attribute to public skepticism.
Public Trust and Government Strategy Shape Adoption
One of the most striking insights emerging from the data is the role of trust in driving AI adoption. In the UAE, 67% of the population trusts AI, compared with just 32% in the United States, according to the Edelman Trust Barometer. This dynamic highlights how confidence in technology — or the lack of it — can significantly accelerate or impede AI integration. Governments that build strong regulatory frameworks and demonstrate clear benefits tend to see higher user engagement.
At the other end of the spectrum, Cambodia recorded one of the lowest AI adoption rates globally, at just 5.1%, underscoring the challenges faced by nations with limited investment and digital infrastructure.

Asian Excitement Defies Demographics
Interestingly, the report also delves into attitudes toward AI, revealing that countries with younger populations are generally more enthusiastic about integrating AI into everyday life. Indonesia, Malaysia, and India headline global rankings of “AI optimism,” each with excitement levels exceeding 60% — a reflection of youthful demographics and rapid digital transition.
However, some countries buck this trend. Thailand, despite an older average population, reported notably high enthusiasm for AI, with 79% of respondents expressing excitement about AI-driven products and services. This suggests that strong government backing for innovation and digital policies can meaningfully shape public perception and readiness to adopt new technology.
Thailand’s Strategic AI Opportunities
For Thailand, these findings carry significant implications as the kingdom moves to sharpen its competitive edge in technology. The high levels of AI optimism among Thais point to fertile ground for expanding AI education, business integration, and public trust initiatives. Coupled with national investments in digital infrastructure and talent development, Thailand is well positioned to elevate its role in the regional AI landscape.
This global AI adoption landscape underscores that while technological capability is vital, strategic governance and societal confidence are equally crucial in shaping the future of digital societies.
