AI News: A Game Changer for Merchants Worldwide

Alibaba International has unveiled its latest technological innovation, the Accio Agent, an advanced AI-powered trade assistant built on its Accio B2B search engine. Designed to revolutionize international sourcing, the tool comes after Accio surpassed two million users and is being positioned as a leap from a simple search-and-sourcing platform to a comprehensive AI-driven commerce solution. This AI News report highlights how the system targets a growing segment of small and medium-sized businesses, with research from Alibaba showing that 40% of such enterprises are run by solo entrepreneurs working with limited time and resources.

By replacing multiple manual steps with automated processes, Accio Agent aims to cut complex sourcing workflows from weeks to mere minutes. The tool offers merchants the efficiency of a professional team without the overhead, combining market intelligence, compliance verification, supplier vetting, and production planning into one seamless pipeline.

Automating the Entire Sourcing Journey

The AI can handle about 70% of the traditional manual work required in international product sourcing. Merchants start by entering a product idea, after which Accio Agent generates a comprehensive development plan complete with market data, design specifications, and relevant regulatory requirements. Once approved, the system progresses to supplier identification, request-for-quotation distribution, and side-by-side comparison, ultimately producing a production-ready roadmap. Users can then send inquiries directly to pre-vetted sellers on Alibaba.com, dramatically reducing the time and effort involved in supplier selection.

Trained on one billion product listings and 50 million supplier profiles, the AI uses sophisticated language models to analyze customer reviews, assess supplier performance, and detect unique manufacturing capabilities. Its procurement algorithms weigh multiple factors—quality, cost, compliance, and innovation—ensuring merchants get the most suitable options for their needs.

An AI That Works Like an Entire Team

According to Kuo Zhang, Vice President of Alibaba International, Accio Agent operates like a multi-role business team, encompassing sourcing agents, product developers, engineers, and market researchers. This functionality is particularly beneficial for entrepreneurs and small businesses seeking to compete with larger players without the need for substantial manpower.

Market projections indicate that the e-commerce AI sector will be worth USD 7.68 billion by 2025 and could reach USD 37.69 billion by 2032, with a compound annual growth rate of 25.5%. With global trade hitting a record value of $33 trillion in 2024 according to UNCTAD, the stakes for AI-driven commerce tools have never been higher.

Expanding the Alibaba Ecosystem

The launch coincides with Alibaba Group’s reported plans to introduce a cross-service membership programme in China, connecting its flagship e-commerce platform Taobao with services such as Ele.me food delivery, Fliggy travel bookings, and Freshippo grocery retail. This follows a June restructuring that merged Ele.me and Fliggy into the broader e-commerce group, signalling Alibaba’s shift from being solely an online marketplace to a diversified consumer service platform.

The company also intends to grow its 88VIP membership programme, which already boasts over 50 million subscribers. This loyalty scheme offers benefits like free returns and discounts, making it the largest paid e-commerce membership programme in China.

Beyond Sourcing—The Rise of AI Agents Across Alibaba

The Accio Agent launch follows a trend of AI integration across Alibaba’s business units. Recently, its mapping service Amap introduced its own AI agent, capable of planning trips and suggesting destinations based on conversational prompts like “find a quiet place with a lake view.” These developments reflect Alibaba’s broader strategy to embed AI across multiple sectors, from logistics to customer engagement, to increase operational efficiency and lower costs.

A New Era for Online Trade

By automating the most time-consuming elements of global sourcing, Alibaba’s Accio Agent could reshape how international commerce is conducted. It not only levels the playing field for smaller businesses but also signals a shift towards “agentic purchase” models, where AI agents oversee the complete trade cycle from concept to fulfilment.

The implications extend beyond cost savings—this technology could change competitive dynamics in e-commerce, reduce barriers to market entry, and accelerate product innovation. As more companies adopt AI-driven sourcing, the speed of business transactions is likely to increase dramatically, enabling rapid response to market trends and consumer demands. For entrepreneurs worldwide, this represents a powerful new tool that could redefine their growth potential.
